Saturday Sunrise with Hyacinths
Twenty Degrees
saw the sun
for a moment
now behind
blue-grey clouds
same color
as the water
Lake Michigan calm
a few
birds migrating
North
with the sun…
furnace turns on
fragrance of small
hyacinth
stirs the air
with promise of
Spring

I wrote this haiku several years ago, on an Ash Wednesday, inspired by a bouquet of flowers at the time. This poem was published in SMILE (2000).
