Poems by Ellen Grace Olinger

quiet hours

quiet hours
of reading
before dawn

of a lamp
in the window

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Psalm 119:105 (KJV)

Petals On Wood

The daylilies in the vase
Are ending

       Petals drop on wood

I leave them
They express something poignant

       That words never could.

“Petals On Wood” was published in ARTS ALIVE:  A LITERARY REVIEW (1988, The Tinley Park – Park District; Illinois).

more hours of light

more hours of light
this time in May

I look up often
from the page
I am reading

yes, this window now
the shape of light
on the wall

and later another way
as the day begins to end
the night –
and then predawn

and watching again

An old poem:

and watching
the sky grow light
gift of another day
to read and write

Creative Observations

We’ve had a lot of rain, and the farmers are working in their fields.  There are tiny corn plants in some fields, which is one of my favorite views every year.  Then the tall plants, and the harvest:  always seems like only a moment has gone by.

Summer takes awhile to arrive here, and pelicans are here these days.
