Early quiet . . .

Early quiet, as the day begins to grow. This Spring, I ordered used books from small stores at Amazon.

One good example is The Deep Place Where Nobody Goes: Conversations with God on the steps of my soul, by Jill Briscoe (published first in 2005; Monarch Books, UK). You can view the information at Amazon. Jill is gifted in many ways, and I especially enjoy her poetry and honest reflections about life and faith. And I like the book design – easy to read, with many colors and images.

The Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative (MHVI) is serving many people, and they are “strong partners” with Goodwill.

Cold Weather

I am grateful for our home, heat, light, and the ability to make a cup of coffee and breakfast. Routine work around the house. All ways of being creative.

As I sit for a time today, I also remember MHVI, the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative, which we support. They are celebrating 10 years of service: 2008 – 2018. Veterans in our family are on their Wall of Honor.

So many ways to help our communities, nearby and around the world.

We are also seeing volunteers for the Salvation Army.  This is a poem from my archives:

Salvation Army
bell ringers
so cheerful in the cold
adding a dollar
to a Red Kettle or two

It is good to see food pantry collections in grocery stores.  I love my old sweaters and books from thrift stores.  All works together.

I see Veterans Day is this week, November 11.  Among other groups, we support the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative (MHVI). We donated to their Wall Of Honor in memory of my father, Harold A. Borgh.

Some of the favorite poems on my blog are for family.  Some of you may remember this poem.

A POEM FOR YOU (1991)

I taped up a picture of you
It must have been your last
Healthy Christmas–long overdue,
But you understand
I know you do.

And I’m up early to have some
Time alone before teaching, too
And I understand even more now
You know I do.

Mom’s doing better now…
She told me how you stood
Between two railroad cars
All the way from Washington D.C.
To Chicago after World War II.

And I’m teaching my heart out
Giving essay tests, too
Pouring out my soul
Like you used to do.

It’s Christmas again, and I
Taped up a picture of you
I’m writing poems and
Taking walks–doing fine
But missing you
Has not ceased with time.
