Encouragement: Poems and Photos

Welcoming Hope: Poems for those in need is a beautiful poetry anthology with Time Of Singing. The cover and illustrations are by Charles A. Waugaman. We published the book in 2007, and it has lasted. The themes are timeless and many poets are featured. Lora Homan Zill and I served as Editors. Please visit the books page at Time Of Singing, if you wish to know more about this book.

Art and Friendship

The card is a watercolor painting by Charles A. Waugaman (1932 – 2010). I created the still life arrangement and the photo is by Karl. I take good care of cards from Charles and other friends.

Charles A. Waugaman created this book cover and illustrated Welcoming Hope: Poems For Those In Need, an anthology we published with Time Of Singing (2007, Elin Grace Publishing). Copies may still be ordered from the TOS Books Page. The themes are timeless. Lora Homan Zill and I were Editors and Charles was Art Editor.

Books

This week I am rereading a poetry collection that we published with Time Of Singing in 2007: Welcoming Hope, Poems for those in need. The book may be ordered from the Time Of Singing books page.

The cover art is by Charles A. Waugaman (1932 – 2010), who also illustrated the book. Lora Homan Zill and I were editors. The TOS books page lists the featured poets.

The poems are timeless, and I am so grateful we were able to complete this book. Because of all that life has held since then, and new times now, I reread the poems and discover new meaning. And I am grateful.

Quiet Christmas Poetry, our large print chapbook, may also be ordered from the Time Of Singing books page. You can combine orders of both books, for the special price of 3 copies for 12 dollars. I know sometimes people also like to buy a book, and set it aside for a gift some day.

I have started a few new poetry chapbooks on my blogs, and have some drafts in my computer files. For now, I am letting these projects rest, and sharing what I have already been able to achieve. And posting my new “journal poems” here often.

Quiet Christmas Poetry began as a blog. Then Karl created the print book in 2014 from the site – all the content was there. The book was then printed by GT Graphics in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Many ways to create.

Creative Notes: Pages

It is interesting to look at the stats, and see posts and pages from the past that are being read now.

These are two examples of Pages, which are filed under MENU in the upper right hand corner of this blog.

I was honored that Sandra requested permission to reprint content I wrote for The Haiku Foundation.

From Quiet Christmas Poetry – Karl and I gave gifts to staff at thrift stores yesterday.  We also mailed copies to places that care for people who may be encouraged by the book.  Next year, we plan to gradually share copies with Wisconsin libraries.

Copies may be ordered from the Time Of Singing books page.  All proceeds benefit this poetry print journal.  The price is 5 dollars per copy, or 3 for $12.00.  You’ll also see information about Welcoming Hope: Poems for those in need, which is the anthology we published with Time Of Singing.  You can combine orders for both books, for the special 3 for $12.00 price.

The TOS books page
provides more information
about the editors, artists, and poets.

One more book note in the spirit of National Poetry Month:

Welcoming Hope: Poems for those in need (2007, Elin Grace Publishing) is a poetry anthology we published with Time Of Singing: A Journal Of Christian Poetry.  There are poems by many poets.  Lora Homan Zill and I co-edited the book, and Charles A. Waugaman was the Art Editor and Illustrator.

This book is still in print and blessing other people.  It is the first book listed on the Time Of Singing books page, followed by the Christmas chapbook.  All proceeds benefit Time Of Singing.  I love the way blogs and print journals can support one another.

Over the years, I’ve been told that I have “the gift of encouragement.”  The goal of these books is to bring a few moments of beauty and hope to others.  All my work is collaboration, and it all takes time.  Even years.  Then years go by, and the work still feels new.  God’s grace.

Thank you, Ellen

Salvaging Hope by Charles A. Waugaman

Salvaging Hope

Like truth out of living
I salvage blueberries, one by one,
From the tangled mat of the meadow.
Small as they are,
The grasses fight for them,
Vetch maneuvers in camouflage,
And wild rose claws at my wrists.
Birds spy from the hedgerow
And sing indifferent melodies
Hoping to lure me away
From their succulent repast.
Why this surprising demand?
Blueberries are wealth:
They are something of sun
And something of soil;
They are sky and wildness;
Beauty and wine,
Winnowed from weedy worthlessness,
Blueberries glow in my palm
As welcome … as hope.
