Gardens and Seasons

August plants and flowers discover a new home in our yard. Grateful to see goldenrod and new thistle plants. Last year, there were many bees when the goldenrod bloomed.

A few years ago, Karl removed the invasive garlic mustard plants. The Garlic mustard page has more information, at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Some new space was created.

We appreciate the variety of gardens we see in the area, including formal gardens, a few plants by a door, and wildflowers. I learn a little more each year, from the gardens here and blog posts. As I write, I think about holiday lights – the many ways people decorate. A grand display, and then something simple. All works together. The beauty of today, and every month and season.

On September 21, 2021, we stopped first at Friends Fishing Pond, which is part of Kohler-Andrae State Park. The small visitor center was open at Kohler-Andrae State Park, and we bought some cards. This selection of photos by Karl is from both places.

Garden Work

I wrote about Karl’s work to remove the garlic mustard in our gardens last year. Looking at the yard this week, I can see that about 90% – if not more – of this invasive plant is gone. A great success so far.

And I can see how the Spring and Summer perennials have more room and are growing well.

May begins with primroses

May begins with a small primrose plant in bloom near the house.

Last year, Karl had to remove a lot of garlic mustard, which is invasive. Those weeds have to be thrown out in bags. Not a compost pile.

I learned more about Garlic Mustard and why it is an “ecological threat” at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Karl also pruned our cotoneasters last year and tiny new bushes are growing again.

And I continue to watch good programs at Milwaukee PBS.

At Poems From Psalms And Nature, I began a new series on the theme of Mercy and Gratitude, which will feature my poems inspired by thrift stores, with links to the store sites.
